Microwaving in Plastic? Here's What to Check First
Not all plastic containers are safe for microwave use. The material matters more than most people realize.
Polypropylene (PP / #5) is the most reliable option for microwave heating. It has strong heat resistance and is widely approved for food-contact applications at higher temperatures.
PET (#1), PVC (#3), and LDPE (#4) have lower heat tolerance. Under microwave conditions, these materials can degrade and potentially transfer unwanted compounds into food.
Silicone is a non-plastic alternative worth considering — it handles higher temperatures well and is generally regarded as a safer option for microwave use.
Before heating, flip the container over and check the recycling symbol on the base. If it isn't marked microwave-safe, use a different container.
